Local Seed Bank Stores in Michigan (Not Recommended)
Some Michigan shops and licensed retailers may carry seeds or clones, but local options usually have limited selection.
Physical stores have limited shelf space, so they may not stock the strain you want.
They may also charge more, because of overhead costs and smaller customer bases.
Considering these factors, we recommend that you buy marijuana seeds at online stores like ILGM and Herbies USA Express, as mentioned earlier.
The Legality of Marijuana Seeds in Michigan
Michigan legalized the recreational use of marijuana through the passing of Proposal 1 in November 2018. The law took effect in December 2018.
Under the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act, adults 21 and older may possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana (no more than 15 grams as concentrate) and up to 10 ounces at home.
Adults may grow up to 12 marijuana plants for personal use per residence. The plants must be in an enclosed area with locks or other security devices and not visible from a public place without binoculars or aircraft.
Michigan also regulates sales. Only licensed businesses may sell marijuana.
Federal law is stricter. Adult-use marijuana is still a Schedule I controlled substance; in April 2026 the Justice Department moved only FDA-approved products and state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III, according to the Congressional Research Service.
Is it Legal to Buy & Grow Cannabis Seeds in Michigan?
Growing is legal for adults 21+ in Michigan, within the 12-plant limit per residence.
The 12-plant cap applies to the whole residence, not to each person.
You can grow indoors or outdoors, but outdoor plants still need a locked enclosure and must not be visible from a public place.
Should You Grow Weed Indoors or Outdoors in Michigan?
Good seeds are only half the job. You also need to decide whether to grow indoors or outdoors.
Growing Marijuana Indoors
Indoor growers control temperature, humidity, and lighting.
Michigan's cold winters and unpredictable weather can be hard on outdoor plants.
Indoors, you can grow year-round in a stable environment, with more consistent results.
Growing Weed Seeds Outdoors
Outdoor growing uses free sunlight, and Michigan's warm summers suit cannabis.
Outdoor growing also avoids the cost of indoor equipment and electricity.
When to Sprout Cannabis Seeds in Michigan
Timing depends on your growing method and strain. Here are some general guidelines:
For indoor cultivation, you can start seeds at any time of year.
You control the environment, so you can begin whenever you're ready.
For outdoor growing, timing matters more.
Many growers start seeds indoors a few weeks before the last frost date in their area.
That gives seedlings time to strengthen before they go outside in warmer weather.
The last frost date varies across Michigan, so check local gardening resources or MSU Extension for your area.
Best Strains to Grow in Michigan
Looking for the best Michigan cannabis seeds? Here are some popular options.
THC levels, yields, and flowering times vary by grower, setup, and batch. No strain is proven to treat a medical condition.
1. OG Kush
OG Kush is one of the most famous strains in the US, and its exact origins are disputed. It is often linked to Chemdawg and Hindu Kush genetics, but no breeder record confirms its parents.
OG Kush is a hybrid known for an earthy, piney aroma with a spicy taste.
It has a reputation for potency, so start with a small amount.
2. White Widow
White Widow is a classic, and White Widow feminized seeds are a popular pick for new growers. Check ILGM's site for its current germination guarantee.
If you want a shorter, simpler grow, consider autoflower seeds, which don't need a light-schedule change to flower.
Outdoor plants in full sun usually grow larger than indoor plants. Yields vary widely with your setup and skill.
