Where to Buy Marijuana Seeds in Louisiana: Online Seed Banks

Louisiana allows medical marijuana for patients with a physician's recommendation, but adult-use cannabis is illegal. Only state-licensed manufacturers may grow cannabis, so home growing is not legal for anyone.

This guide covers where seed buyers shop online, what state and federal law say, and three well-known strains. It is written for adults 21 and older.

ILGM (I Love Growing Marijuana) is a popular U.S. seed bank that advertises discreet delivery, a germination guarantee, and a large catalog.

Online seed banks offer wide strain selections and customer support. Many also run free-seed or shipping promotions.

A seed bank shipping to Louisiana doesn't make germinating the seeds legal there.

Local Seed Bank Stores in Louisiana (Not Recommended)

Louisiana's licensed medical marijuana retailers sell products made by the state's licensed manufacturers to patients with a valid recommendation. They are not a source of seeds for home growing.

Smoke shops or garden stores that advertise seeds sell them as novelty or souvenir items, with limited selection and no germination guarantees. Online seed banks like ILGM and Herbies offer far wider catalogs.

The Legality of Marijuana Seeds in Louisiana

Adult-use marijuana is illegal in Louisiana. Possessing it outside the medical program is still an offense.

Medical marijuana is legal for patients with a valid recommendation from a board-certified Louisiana physician. Since January 1, 2025, the Louisiana Department of Health regulates the retailers, and the state has two licensed medical marijuana manufacturers.

Is it Legal to Buy and Grow Cannabis Seeds in Louisiana?

Seeds sit in a gray area. Under the 2018 farm bill, hemp includes cannabis seeds with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC, which is why seed banks ship them.

That is changing. The new federal hemp definition in P.L. 119-37 excludes viable seeds from plants above 0.3% total THC, starting December 11, 2026.

Growing cannabis in Louisiana is limited to licensed manufacturers. Federal law also still lists marijuana in Schedule I; a DEA final rule effective April 28, 2026 moved only FDA-approved products and state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III.

For official updates, review the Louisiana Department of Health's medical marijuana program page.

Should You Grow Weed Indoors or Outdoors in Louisiana?

Home growing isn't legal in Louisiana, so this section is general background in case the law changes. The state's hot, humid climate is the main challenge.

Indoor growing offers more control over temperature, humidity, and pests. Dehumidifiers and good ventilation help prevent mold and mildew.

Outdoor growing is cheaper but exposed to heavy rain and storms. Well-spaced, pruned plants dry faster and are less prone to mold.

For general background on moisture and mold control, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers an educational overview of mold in homes.

When to Sprout Cannabis Seeds in Louisiana

Indoor setups can start seeds any time of year. Outdoors, Louisiana's long, warm season usually allows planting in spring after the last frost.

High humidity makes seedlings prone to damping-off and root rot. Clean containers, a well-draining mix, and airflow help prevent these problems.

Best Strains to Grow in Louisiana

In a humid climate, growers usually look for hardy strains with relatively short flowering times. Seed banks list flowering times and THC levels as estimates; results vary by grower and conditions.
